Welcome back my lovelies and apologies for the break! It has been a super busy and very exciting few months for my little company so Goslings fabulous advice has had to take a back seat. I have been overwhelmed by how many people have missed this and thanks for all your emails and grief stricken messages asking for him back - I had no idea we had such a following!
Well fear not we are back - yey! and we start off again by asking you to be super critical with what you offer. Take a look at my mistake…
Are you shocked at my behaviour Ryan Gosling?
Yes he is clearly quite shocked.
We all have our special talents and that is what sets us apart from the crowd so why oh why do we feel the need to do something just because everyone else is doing it? My hand finished fiasco is a perfect example of how doing this is only going to hinder your business. You are not skilled therefore it takes you twice or even three times as long to do it and you ultimately end up making no money from it. Epic fail people. Think about it - your ultimate aim when running your own business is to do what you love everyday so why on earth would you force yourself to offer a service you know nothing about or are unskilled at?
Now when potential clients ask about hand finishing I confidently direct them to a fellow stationer who does it to perfection, the same goes with any specialist print finish such as letterpress, thermography etc. I don’t have an interest or a skill in this area but a lot of companies do so I direct the client to an expert - this is what they deserve. By doing this I am not losing a client as they never really wanted my product - I am actually saving myself hours of frustration. In turn I have the time to hone my own unique offering and develop my talent concentrating on the clients who love what I do. My client also knows what to expect from the beginning which is so important when managing expectations and I have such confidence and faith in my product and skill.
I can proudly say that I create beautiful detailed printed stationery with a unique style and that feels good. I am also doing what I love everyday. Win. By being super critical with what you offer is the only way you can achieve this way of working. You cannot be everything to everybody so be proud of what you do offer and do it to the best of your ability.
… and so the love affair with my graphics tablet continues and I’m happy to report that my bear paws are now kept firmly away from the ribbons and glue guns.
